International Tech Nonprofit Launches Stock Market in Symbolic Move Demonstrating The Economic Power of Diversity

New York – January 23rd, 2017Women Who Code (WWCode), a global 501c3 that works to support and highlight the achievements of female engineers will be ringing the New York Stock Exchange opening bell on Monday, January 23rd. This will be the second time that the organization has had this honor. This emblematic statement about the power of diversity in technology comes just two days after the Women’s March, an event expected to be the largest protest supporting gender equality in American history.

“Empowering a more diverse group of people to succeed in technology careers can have a catalytic impact on the prosperity of every industry.,” said Alaina Percival, CEO and Board Chair of Women Who Code. “Our mission now is more important than ever, and we’re proud to be able to make this symbolic statement by commencing the business day at the New York Stock Exchange.”

Over thirty Women Who Code Directors, Leaders, Evangelists, Advisors and Members from Seattle, San Francisco, Atlanta, DC, London and other locations are are flying into New York to attend the event. The WWCode Global Team will be represented by WWCode CEO Alaina Percival, WWCode CTO Zassmin Montes de Oca, and WWCode Global Leadership Director Joey Rosenberg. Women Who Code sponsors Capital One, represented by SVP, Commercial Bank CIO Julie Elberfeld, and VMWare, represented by Senior Director Amee Cooper, will also be in attendance.

Women Who Code was formed as a meetup group in 2011. Finding that there was a growing need for an inclusive community in tech they expanded rapidly, and in 2013 they achieved 501c3 status. Today they have over 80,000 members as well as Networks in 60 cities and 20 countries around the world. They have held more than 4,200 free technical events, and they have given away $1M in technical scholarships and conference tickets in the last year.
