Remembering Gabby Hall

Written by Natalia Daies

In Memory

With deep sorrow, we announce the untimely passing of our dear colleague and cherished friend, Gabby Hall. Gabby was a talented writer and a dedicated advocate for women of color. She led Women Who Code's social strategy, inspiring us with her monthly career navigation articles and urging us to embrace advocacy wholeheartedly. Gabby's commitment to inclusion and equity resonated deeply within our team and the global Women Who Code community.

From Buffalo, New York, Gabby graduated from the University at Buffalo in 2022 with a bachelor's degree in communications and a minor in sociology. Gabby's love for writing and storytelling extended beyond social media to short stories, romance fiction, and more. Gabby sought to honor the imagination of her childhood self while interweaving her life experiences. She received several journalism awards, including the University at Buffalo's Division of University Communications Student Scholarship in 2020 and the Carl R. Allen scholarship from the Buffalo Association of Black Journalists in 2019, for her remarkable achievements as a Black journalist in Buffalo.

As Women Who Code's Social Media Manager, Gabby led social strategy for several pivotal, first-time campaigns such as What's Trending With Your Techie Bestie, Applaud Her Awards: 100 Technologists to Watch, Ready for Work, and Job of the Day. She also introduced "Who's Your Teal?" — inviting the WWCode community to reflect on the people in our lives who came to us when we needed them most, who believed in us when we didn't believe in ourselves, and who made us feel supported, guided, and empowered. Gabby has been all these things for many of us here at WWCode.

We extend our deepest condolences to Gabby's family, forever love, friends, and loved ones. Together, we join them in honoring and celebrating Gabby's remarkable life. The impact she has had on the WWCode team and community is immeasurable. Gabby's belief in equality and unwavering passion for uplifting others will continue to inspire us as we carry forward her legacy. We will remember Gabby as a beacon of light, a guiding force, and an extraordinary advocate for change. Her influence will remain in the fabric of WWCode. We will honor Gabby's memory by continuing to champion the causes she held dear, fostering a community that reflects the inclusivity and diversity she was dedicated to amplifying.

To honor and celebrate Gabby's beautiful life, her family invites you to explore and share her writings and achievements, published on her website, Words By Gabby.

"I just want to keep writing pieces, particularly [covering] women of color, people of color, and I'm not afraid of saying that's my focus. I know people are like, 'I don't know if you should say that's your focus,' and I'm like, 'Well, someone, somewhere, is going to have to write about these things because they're important,' and I would like to be one of those people." — Gabby, The Spectrum (2019).

You were consistently, beautifully, one of those people, Gabby. Your spirit lives on in all of us. Your words remain in our hearts. Your presence is missed. Rest in peace, sweet, fierce friend.
