Equity in Recruitment for Tech

In celebration of Black History Month, we'd like to draw attention to the many advantages that businesses can enjoy when they focus on building inclusivity and diversity into their hiring processes. While all forms of discrimination can present difficulties for those seeking employment, implicit bias and inadequate outreach are often even more significant issues for Black job seekers.

As a result, businesses that prioritize equity in their recruitment practices can be rewarded with a broader range of prospective employees and more likely find their ideal hire. Taking a proactive stance in increasing awareness about underrepresented individuals as well as extending inclusionary policies, could have far-reaching positive effects in this area. As we strive for greater equality in society, it is critical that we do not overlook the racial inequities that persist in the tech industry. While women of color represent a larger proportion of the workforce than ever before, they continue to be underrepresented in technical roles and executive positions. Even when they make up a larger portion of applicants, these candidates are much less likely to get an interview, let alone an offer. Moreover, those who do find success often experience hostile environments where their voices are dismissed or overlooked.

It is imperative that we work towards solutions that dismantle systemic racism in tech by giving greater access to minorities and investing in initiatives designed to create more diverse leadership roles. Companies should develop concrete goals for hiring and retaining employees of color at all levels within their organization. Additionally, educational programs must continue to expand to provide support and resources for students of color interested in entering the tech sector. Lastly, more equitable access must be granted for high-quality training and certification programs needed for advancement in tech.

Together we can create an industry where everyone feels seen and respected, regardless of their background or race. With persistent effort from all sides of the industry, together we can achieve true equality and justice within our technology systems.
